Sculpting with bones

I have grown a fascination with bones/skulls. More specifically, what a skeleton would look like if the flesh around them was something different than the form it took when it was alive. Often bones are buried or scattered throughout the earth when animals fall to mortality. I collect bones and skulls from various animals and dream about giving them new form. Illumination is my latest work and has a mixture of real and replica bones from a total of 11 different species.

Lost Wax Process

The sculpture is first completed in clay or other material and then mould is made out of latex, polyurethane rubber or silicone. Hot wax is poured into the mould then cooled. The wax copy of the sculpture is then chased in a ceramic coating. wax version is then made from the casting and then the wax is burnt or melted out. Now the bronze metal can be poured into the casting to take the original form of the sculpture. Many sculptures such and Illumination have multiple pieces that need to be welded together to be complete.
